Fear of work automation and other trends in global and Russian cybersecurity

We bring you the most interesting excerpts from two recent studies on trends in information security. One of them was conducted by the world leading audit company PricewaterhouseCoopers, the other - by the American developer of user behavior analysis tools Exabeam.

Fear of automation

Exabeam asked cybersecurity professionals for its research questions related to salaries, educational attainment, job satisfaction and general attitudes towards new technologies. More than 350 professionals from the USA, Singapore, Germany, Australia and the UK participated in the survey.

It turned out that most cybersecurity professionals use a variety of automation solutions, but half of the young employees fear that these technologies could take their jobs. 53% of respondents under the age of 45 reported that artificial intelligence and machine learning pose a threat to their employment. If we talk about the group of respondents aged 45 and over, among them only 25% of people share this opinion.

“This attitude towards automation among young cybersecurity professionals surprised us. We can partially explain this by a lack of on-the-job training for these technologies, ”says Samantha Humphries, security strategist at Exabeam. “It is also possible that the reason is the current situation in the economy and a general lack of experience in managing people in a global recession,” she says. “In addition, this career fear and lack of understanding of automation can affect job safety.

Exabeam conducted a similar survey in 2019 among cybersecurity professionals from the US, UK, Australia, Canada, India and the Netherlands. Then only 10% of respondents considered automation a threat to their career.

IB and coronavirus

For the Digital Trust survey , PricewaterhouseCoopers surveyed 3,249 respondents. Most of them agree that this year the coronavirus has greatly affected their sphere. According to the agency, at the beginning of the pandemic, corporate digitalization was proceeding at a very high speed. 40% of respondents in global companies say they are using new business strategies and accelerating digitalization. Of all the Russian executives surveyed, 24% say this.

96% of those surveyed say that they plan to change the information security strategy due to the pandemic. Half of the respondents think to consider cybersecurity issues along with every business decision they make, while a year ago there were only 25% of such people. “One of our biggest challenges is to improve how security teams communicate with business units across the organization. This is the only way we can achieve our goals, ”says Katie Jenkins, director of information security for the international insurance group LibertyMutual.

21% of global respondents change jobs at their company, and 18% are starting to explore new markets or industries. In Russia, these figures are 13% and 14%. Improving operational efficiency and speed is a top digital goal for 29% of global executives. 31% of leaders are focused on modernization with the involvement of new competencies. In Russia, these figures are 42% and 21%, respectively. At the same time, 47% of Russian respondents talk about accelerating automation in order to reduce costs, which looks logical given the overall decline in revenue.

55% of respondents from global companies plan to increase their budget for information security, and 51% are going to increase the number of specialized employees. In Russia these figures are 52% and 42%, respectively. 44% of global respondents and 43% of Russian respondents say they are trying to implement new budgeting methods and are thinking about how best to convince management to allocate additional funds.

55% of global respondents and 53% of Russian respondents believe that current information security costs do not cover serious potential risks. They believe that cybersecurity budgets need to be aligned with overall spending based on data and risk strategy.

How the labor market in information security will change

51% of global respondents and 42% of Russian respondents say that in 2021 they plan to increase the number of employees in the field of IT security. But the areas in which they consider expertise to be in demand. These are cloud solutions (43%), cyber threat research (40%) and data analysis (37%). In our country, these are analytical skills (70%) and understanding of the specifics of business processes (54%). In the United States alone, right now the labor market situation is as follows - demand is twice the supply. And by 2021 it is planned that there will be more than 3 million open vacancies.

How do you acquire and maintain a sufficient skill level to be of value in this market? To do this, you need to constantly learn and master new technologies. 72% of global respondents and 49% of Russian respondents say they manage to allocate more than 3 hours a week for training. They call communication with colleagues and current online courses with the issuance of certificates based on the results of training as the most effective ways of self-education.
