The video platform PeerTube, created in 2015 by web developer Chocobozzz, is currently supported by the French non-profit organization Framasoft [3]. Its goal is to create an alternative to the popular commercial centralized platforms YouTube, Vimeo, and Dailymotion.

How the network works
By default, each PeerTube server provides a web interface for searching and viewing videos, with its own capabilities, rules and appearance, independent of other instances.
In addition, federations can be formed on the PeerTube network, consisting of several instances that have common rules (for example, allowing identical content, requiring registration), distributing their videos together, despite the fact that these videos are only on the copies on which they were published ... All federations are independent from each other. [4] [5]
Peer-to-peer networking is the foundation of video distribution on Peertube. Each network user acts as a relay point, sending the rest of the video fragments. [6]
Origin and history
Sepia, the Peertube mascot PeerTube
was created by web developer Chocobozzz to distribute video as an alternative to YouTube using the WebTorrent protocol [7]. In 2017, Framasoft contacted him, which then launched the Contributopia campaign [8], the goal of which was to create alternative decentralized platforms. To help him in his work, especially with the improvement of design and usability, Framesoft hired a programmer.
Launched in 2018 by the same Framesoft crowdfunding campaign on KissKissBankBank brought in € 53,100 instead of the expected € 20,000 [9] [3].
March 2018 was the month that PeerTube was beta [10] and the first stable release came out in October 2018. In June 2018, just a few months after the beta version was released, there were 133 copies on the Internet [11], which together contained more than 10,000 videos [12] [13].
As a result of the disappearance of their videos due to changes in YouTube channel monetization rules, in June 2018 the Blender Foundation began experimenting with hosting their videos on PeerTube instances for distribution on the Internet. [14]
Technology
Video about PeerTube
The core technology in PeerTube is WebTorrent. A torrent tracker hosted on each server distributes the watched videos along with a web browser. As a result, along with the required network bandwidth, the load on each server, which its clients share with it, is reduced thanks to p2p technology.
Behind the federations of instances are independent entities, and the whole system is built on this basis. The same web interface for each server allows users to view as many videos as they want, both on it and on other servers with which it is federated. Without building an infrastructure like the web giants, such federation allows you to bring together a huge amount of videos on a single platform. At the same time, each server works and remains under the control of its original administrator.
PeerTube's ActivityPub protocol resists censorship and prohibits vendor binding to provide decentralization and interoperability with other federated services. [14] [15]
Finally, this software is integrated into popular video platforms Reddit [16], Kodi [17] and others, and uses PostgreSQL DBMS.
