3 hackathons from Vkontakte: fear and loathing in Singer

The hackathon "Vezdekod" from the "Vkontakte" company has recently ended, which left a lot of positive and negative impressions that it is criminal to leave with you. This is already their third event that I took part in, so I want to share the experience of all three, remember how it was and show other hackathoners all the pitfalls. There will be some photos and emotions along with technical details. Welcome under the cut!

Hackathon 2017 - Rapture

In 2017 I was in the 2nd year of university. At that time, I was moonlighting as a system administrator at a university, actively programming and just beginning to comprehend all the comfort of IT events. My comrades and I tried to make a mobile application as a home project and decided to send an application for the hackathon just like that. We then set ourselves an extremely ambitious goal: to make it possible to translate voice messages into text by pressing only one button (then this function was not yet available). Needless to say, at that time it was a difficult task for us to even raise the simplest web server, and neural networks seemed like something distant. However, then ambitions splashed over the edge, so the application on the first day flew into the bowels of the Vkontakte servers.

Once a languid rainy evening of our team members was diluted with the message that we were invited to a hackathon from Vkontakte. Our joy knew no bounds. We must pay tribute to our university, the trip was sponsored for us. Not business class, of course, but then we were ready to go in a freight train just to get to the event, so our joy only increased.

When the first emotional wave subsided, then the next one covered us - a wave of awareness that we need to somehow recognize speech. And, of course, no one had the slightest idea how to do it. A Google search prompted us to DeepSpeech and we decided that we can do everything and the sea is knee-deep. It was with these sentiments that we plunged into the Platskart, where I zealously began to study a book on machine learning, and my teammate - "The Brothers Karamazov" by Dostoevsky. Something clearly promised to help.

The hackathon was held in a large rented hall:

These three activities were really cool, they gave me a lot of dating and emotions. Again, if you have no experience in hackathons, I recommend trying it at least once. It is unpleasant that with each event more and more negative emotions appear. I hope that next year the trend will be interrupted, mistakes are taken into account and the hackathon will delight both organizers and participants!
