Seagate releases 18 TB HDD

Seagate has launched the new Exos X18 family of hard drives. Enterprise-class HDD capacity - 18 TB. The disc is available for $ 561.75.

In addition, the Exos Application Platform (AP) 2U12 and the new controller for AP 4U100 systems are presented. Capacious storage and computing resources are combined in one platform. AP also offers enterprise-grade embedded software, data protection, and automatic storage tiering.

The Seagate Exos X18 and updated Exos AP controllers will enable enterprises to effectively address exponential data growth challenges by increasing system capacity and reducing deployment complexity, manufacturers say. The new hard drive is suitable for cloud and multi-cloud environments, backup and recovery systems, high-capacity RAID arrays, centralized video surveillance platforms and more.

High reliability and resilience to tough workloads is what Seagate is committed to. For example, the Exos X18 uses helium filling technology. The density of helium is 7 times lower than the density of air, which reduces the friction force acting on the magnetic plates inside the hard drives. Also, replacing with helium reduces the force of gas flows, which affects the positioning of the heads and disc plates. Taken together, this can increase HDD capacity and significantly improve the total cost of ownership for data centers and cloud infrastructures.

The Seagate Exos X18 uses traditional magnetic recording - CMR. This eliminates the inherent tiled recording (SMR) problems. Recall that when CMR and SMR disks were used together in one RAID array, the majority of users experienced array degradation, SMR disks dropping out and performance loss during ordinary operations. Moreover, the massif destroyed in this way often could not be restored.

Wide weld seam protects against leaks and adds reliability to the new HDD. The reliability factor is also influenced by the Seagate Secure encryption technology, which preserves data even if the drives are lost, stolen, or installed in another system.

What else does the new model of the Exos X18 family offer:

  • 3.5-inch form factor;
  • SATA 3.0 interface with bandwidth up to 6 Gb / s;
  • spindle rotation speed - 7200 RPM;
  • the declared MTBF reaches 2.5 million hours;
  • the number of IOPS for random read / write 4k-blocks - 170/550;
  • average latency - 4.16 ms;
  • PowerBalance system - to optimize power consumption;
  • digital sensors - to monitor the state of the containment area.
