Face recognition terminals in access control systems

Facial recognition in access control systems meets the growing demand for contactless identification solutions. Today, this method of biometric identification is a global trend: the average annual growth of the market for systems based on face recognition is estimated by analysts at 20%. This figure is projected to rise to USD 4 billion in 2023.

Integration of terminals with an access control system

Face recognition as an identification method can be used in ACS for access control, time tracking and integration with CRM and ERP systems. The leading manufacturers of face recognition terminals in the Russian market are Hikvision, Suprema, Dahua and ZKteco.

Integration of face recognition terminals with an access control system can be carried out in three ways, the difference is in the communication interface and the SDK functionality. The first method allows you to add new data of employees or visitors directly in the ACS interface, without adding to terminals - due to the terminal SDK. In the second method, adding new users is carried out both in the ACS interface and directly in the terminals, which is less convenient and more labor-intensive. In both cases, the connection is via the Ethernet interface. The third way is to connect via the Wiegand interface, but in this case the terminals and the ACS will have separate databases.

The review will consider solutions with an Ethernet interface. The ability to add users in the system interface is determined by the terminal SDK. The wider the capabilities of the ACS, the more functionality it will be possible to implement using terminals. For example, the integration of the PERCo-Web access control system with Suprema terminals allows you to add data directly to the system software interface. Other options include capturing and saving photographs of employees and visitors for identification, and online configuration and management of devices.

All events of passage through the terminals are saved in the system. The system allows you to assign an algorithm for reactions to events received from terminals. When an employee passes with face recognition, you can generate a notification event that will be sent to Viber or the system operator's e-mail. The system supports work with the Face Station 2 and FaceLite terminals from Suprema, ProfaceX, FaceDepot 7A, Facedepot 7B, SpeedFace V5L from ZKteco. When an employee or a visitor with a high temperature passes through the ACS, an event is generated, based on which access can be automatically blocked.

The determining factors when choosing terminals for work as part of an access control system are identification security, speed and accuracy of work, ease of use. The reliability of identification primarily determines the presence of protection against emulation and the possibility of two-factor identification. Fast response - high speed of face recognition, ensuring uninterrupted operation of equipment even in conditions of heavy traffic. The recognition accuracy is influenced by the efficiency of the applied algorithm, the number of face and user templates in the terminal's memory, as well as the parameters of the camera operation in various lighting conditions. Convenience in use is provided by the language interface, dimensions and weight of the device. Simplicity of integration, as noted above - communication interface and terminal SDK.Integration is also facilitated by the presence of mounts for face recognition terminals on the turnstiles.

Consider, from the point of view of working in ACS, the technical characteristics of the following models of these manufacturers:

Face Station 2 and FaceLite from Suprema

ProfaceX, FaceDepot 7A, Facedepot 7 B, SpeedFace V5L from ZKteco

DS-K1T606MF, DS-K1T8105E and DS-K1T331W from Hikvision

ASI7223X-A , ASI7214X from Dahua

Emulation protection

Face recognition can be based on 2D or 3D technologies. The first of them is more budgetary, which affects the cost of terminals. Among its disadvantages are high lighting requirements, lower statistical reliability in comparison with 3D, inability to take into account facial expressions. Infrared cameras can increase the accuracy of identification of 2D-based terminals.

Terminals using 3D technology are more expensive, but provide high accuracy and reliability of identification and demonstrate the ability to work in low light conditions. The Suprema and ZKteco terminals use live face detection based on infrared illumination to protect against photo presentation. Hikvision terminals use a deep machine learning algorithm and face biometric authentication. Dahua's face recognition terminals use artificial intelligence and deep learning technologies with support for vitality detection.

Identification speed

The speed of identification of face recognition terminals is especially important for objects with an intense flow of visitors: offices of large companies, industrial enterprises, places of mass stay of people. High speed identification prevents queuing and maximizes throughput. Hikvision DS-K1T331W, Dahua ASI7223X-A and ASI7214X terminals recognize faces in just 0.2 seconds. For the DS-K1T606MF model, identification is carried out in 0.5 seconds, for the DS-K1T8105E - in less than 1 second. The identification speed of Face Station and FaceDepot 7A terminals is less than 1 second.

Two-factor identification

A convenient solution for working in an ACS is face recognition terminals that also support other identification methods: for example, access by card, fingerprint, palm or smartphone. Such solutions make it possible to strengthen access control to the facility due to two-factor identification. The FaceLite and FaceStation 2 terminals are distinguished by the presence of a built-in reader of contactless access cards; in other models we are considering, the reader can be connected additionally. ZKteco terminals also support palm and code identification. Hikvision DS-K1T606MF terminals support fingerprint and Mifare card identification, DS-K1T8105E has a built-in EM-Marine card reader, a contactless card reader can be connected to the DS-K1T331W terminal. The ASI7214X terminal also supports contactless cards and fingerprints.

Temperature measurement

One of the drivers of the growth of the market for face recognition solutions in access control systems is the Covid19 pandemic, so face recognition terminals with the ability to control body temperature have become widespread. This functionality from the models we are considering allows you to implement SpeedFace V5L terminals, which also determine the presence of a mask on the face. Temperature measurement is non-contact, which reduces the risk of infection transmission and minimizes the

need for antiseptic treatment of the device after each measurement.

A convenient solution is to set the temperature control parameters and the presence of a mask in the ACS interface, if the terminal's SDK allows you to enter data directly into the system.

Number of face templates

Template capacity is the maximum number of datasets that can be stored in the system. The higher this indicator, the higher the identification accuracy. The Face Station 2 and FaceLite terminals have a large recognition capacity. They handle up to 900,000 templates. ProFace X terminals store 30,000 templates each, FaceDepot 7A and Facedepot 7B - 10,000 templates each, SpeedFace V5L - 6000.

ASI7223X-A and ASI7214X terminals hold 100,000 templates each.

Number of users and events

The number of users in the memory of the face recognition terminal determines the number of maximum possible identifiers for accessing the object. The larger the object, the higher this indicator should be. The Face Station 2 and FaceLite controllers have a memory capacity of 30,000 users, just like the ProfaceX memory. FaceDepot 7A, Facedepot 7B, SpeedFace V5L process data from 10,000 people. The memory of the DS-K1T8105E terminal is designed for 1600 users, DS-K1T331 - for 3000, DS-K1T606MF - for 3200 users. The ASI7223X-A and ASI7214X terminals process data from 100 thousand users. All events about passage through this terminal are saved in the memory of face recognition terminals. The largest number of events in memory allows you to build reports for the longest selected period of time.

The largest volume of the event log for the Face Station 2 and FaceLite terminals is 5 million. ProfaceX has 1 million. The ASI7223X-A and ASI7214X terminals contain 300,000 events each. The volume of the SpeedFace V5L log is 200,000 events, the DS-K1T331W has 150,000. The FaceDepot 7A and Facedepot 7B and DS-K1T606MF terminals have 100,000 events. The most modest memory capacity of the DS-K1T8105E terminal is only 50,000 events.

Language interface

Not all face recognition terminals on the Russian market have a Russian-language interface, so its presence may be an important factor in choosing.

The Russian-language interface is available in the terminals ProFace X, SpeedFace V5L. In the Face Station 2 terminal, Russian-language firmware is available upon request. Terminal Face Station 2 has an English-language interface. DS-K1T331W supports English, Spanish and Arabic languages, Russian-language interface is not available yet.
