How I looked for a job in Berlin

Usually they tell about stories that have already happened: how someone has already found a job and moved. I am still in the process, so I will tell you what I encountered and what conclusions I came to. Tips will be at the very end.

In March 2020, I came to Berlin for two weeks to rest (then many did not take the crown seriously). A week after my arrival, Germany (and everyone else behind it) closed all borders and declared a state of emergency. I had a window a day to return to Serbia, but I decided to try my luck. Something told me that I would be able to take advantage of the situation with the crown in order to get documents without leaving. And so it happened, I found a migration lawyer, we discussed the situation with him and he took up my case. It was up to me to find a job.

In Germany, the situation on the labor market for programmers, like for everyone else, was not going through its best turn during the pandemic. Many of those who worked full-time were transferred to part-time jobs. Those who worked part-time were fired and were already working for the same company as freelancers. In general, I was ready that I would have to look for work for up to six months.

While still in Serbia, I tried to look for a job in Germany, but for two years no one responded for two reasons:

  • The feedback number was NOT German, but Serbian, which means I am NOT in Germany

  • At that time I did not have a work permit (which almost everyone asked about in the questionnaire at the time of application)

I am not making excuses, but I understand companies for which these two points are important, because usually you have to wait for a visa for months, and sometimes for years (if the position is not in great demand). It all depends on the mood of the consular department of the country from which you are applying. I know cases when people wait for their turn for a term for 18 months, and there are those who decide everything in 2. Companies do not want to risk or waste time.

As soon as the lawyer received a permit for me to work in Germany , and I began to indicate in the questionnaires that I had a visa and left a German number, then calls from recruiters and HR companies began to arrive immediately. In August alone, I had 21 interviews.

Of course , because of Covid, companies only started responding towards the end of July. Before that, there was silence.
