There are two articles on our blog about modular devices. In one of them is described by smartphone Fairphone 3. This project continues to grow, demonstrating the advantages of the concept of plug-in modules. So, now the owners of Fairphone 3 have the opportunity to update the camera.
The developers have recently released an updated model of their device called Fairphone 3+. The camera module for this device is fully compatible with the previous generation of smartphones. The camera is also available separately - you can buy it on the manufacturer's website. Even a child can replace the module, it is not difficult. All you need is a Phillips screwdriver.
In general, Fairphone 3 replaces almost everything: display, battery, camera and other components. There is no need for a service center, the assembly of the device is as "complicated" as a regular Lego is.
The original Fairphone 3 has two cameras: 12 MP rear and 8 MP front. Fairphone 3+ received a 48 MP rear camera and a 16 MP front camera. And now the owners of Fairphone 3 can install the same camera. The cost of the rear module is $ 71, the front one - $ 41. Not cheap, but the capabilities of the new camera are much higher than that of the old one. Both modules can be purchased for a discounted price of $ 85.
Now about the cost of the new device model. It will cost the buyer $ 555. By the way, except for the camera, all other characteristics of the updated model remained the same .

Due to its modularity, the device is slightly thicker than our usual smartphones. Its thickness is about 10 mm. The weight is only 189 grams. But this does not scare the owners of the device - the main thing is that it can be repaired and updated on its own.
By the way, Fairphone is a smartphone only for the European market. Its 4G module does not support the spectrum used by US carriers. Therefore, in America it will only be able to operate on 2G / 3G frequencies.
The device is produced by the Dutch company Fairphone. Last year, iFixit gave the device a 10 out of 10 points on the maintainability scale.
