FOSS News # 30 - free and open source news digest for August 17-23, 2020

Hello!

We continue to digest news and other materials about free and open source software and a little about hardware. The most important thing about penguins and not only, in Russia and the world. This issue turned out to be especially serious in terms of the level of issues raised. We analyze the problems of Mozilla and consider the question of why this applies not only to one company, we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the FreeBSD Foundation, we learn about the founding of the Rust Foundation, which is separate from Mozilla, we are happy with the appearance of a new free driver for NTFS from Russian developers, we study how Linux developers were able to successfully release the recent big release, holivarim (or not) on design and convenience for free software users and we will learn a lot of other new things.

Mozilla β€” IT-,

In the translated material on HabrΓ©, they write about the concern that is caused by the problems with Mozilla (I referred to the relevant news in the previous issue ). β€œ This is not your run-of-the-mill small IT company being squeezed out by trillion-dollar giants like Microsoft, Apple and Google. Mozilla has a rich history and significant contributions to the development of web standards. The fact that she is now in a critical situation is a cause for concern for all of us, ”reads the introduction.

The FreeBSD Foundation celebrates 20 years of promoting and supporting the FreeBSD project

It's FOSS, in its 20th anniversary material of the FreeBSD Foundation, recalls the history of FreeBSD, writes about where FreeBSD is used today and the merits of the foundation, and concludes by writing, β€œ I would like to thank the FreeBSD Foundation for the work they have done over the past twenty years in supporting one of the best free open source operating systems. I hope it continues to develop. I also hope you have many more years of success. FreeBSD may not be as popular with desktop users, but some Linux users are switching to BSD to try and feel more of the "UNIX spirit ".

Mozilla-independent Rust Foundation announced

OpenNET writes: β€œ The Rust Core Team and Mozilla have announced their intention to create the Rust Foundation, an independent non-profit organization by the end of the year, to which the intellectual property associated with the Rust project will be transferred, including the trademarks and domain names associated with Rust, Cargo and crates.io. The organization will also be responsible for arranging financing for the project . "

Paragon Software Releases GPL NTFS Implementation for Linux Kernel

OpenNET writes: β€œ Konstantin Komarov, founder and CEO of Paragon Software, has posted on the Linux kernel mailing list a set of patches with a full implementation of the NTFS file system, which supports read and write operation. The code is open under the GPL license. The implementation supports all the features of the current version of NTFS 3.1, including extended file attributes, data compression mode, efficient work with voids in files and replaying changes from the log to restore integrity after failures. The proposed driver currently uses its own stripped-down implementation of NTFS journal, but in the future it is planned to add support for full journaling . "

Why Largest Linux Kernel Release Wasn't Really So Much an Issue (Key Best Practices for Successful Development)

In a post on Linux.com, a kernel developer and VMware employee discussed the reasons why the Linux developers managed to release such a big 5.8 release, and how they generally manage to successfully develop such a complex project. The main factors of success are named:

  1. using Git "to the fullest" (which was done primarily for Linux needs);
  2. strict requirement for atomicity of commits;
  3. a ban on commits breaking the assembly;
  4. "Bisectability" of the code (binary search for a problem area);
  5. prohibiting rebase of a public repository;
  6. detailed descriptions for commits;
  7. Continuous Testing and Continuous Integration.

"Stop Total Commander!" or the main problem of free software

Perhaps this material on HabrΓ© will seem quite holivar to someone, but in any case it has a grain of truth. The article provides a critical analysis of several free mobile applications in comparison with top-end counterparts and conclusions, focusing on design and user-friendliness issues. At the end of the article, the author, himself an active user and supporter of it, sums up and names the following factors as the main problems of open source software:

  1. no understanding of how to make the product user-friendly;
  2. no resources;
  3. no motivation needed.

The author does not just want to share pain and criticize the community, but calls for a discussion on how to solve problems that, in his opinion, have a place.
