Foreword. Why do I choose free software and what right do I have to criticize it?
I have been observing the development of free software for quite a long time, I myself am a supporter and an active user. I became interested in open source software about a year and a half ago. I don’t remember what exactly, whether another cannibalistic law, a major data leak or an article that caught my eye made me think about my privacy, but since then I started looking for alternatives to proprietary software and services of large corporations that I was using at that moment.
The criterion was simple: the developer must respect my privacy. However, after stories like the Snowden leak, I was not ready to take the companies' word for it, so I turned to FOSS.
The code is open - everything is visible. Telemetry and hazy activity will not go unnoticed. In addition, the main purpose of data collection is still earnings. Open source software is developed by enthusiasts or NGOs, belongs to the community and does not try to make money for its creators. Well, nice bonuses: you can fork, participate in development, pay nothing, and so on. In general, since then I really fell in love with FOSS and tried a huge number of solutions, I still use many now, and therefore I believe that I have every right to praise and criticize the products that I used myself , which I will do in today's article.
