Laying the foundation for the future of Rust

Rust was conceived in 2010 (whichever you think you might say 2006 !) As a project at Mozilla Research , but its long-term goal was to create a stand-alone project. In 2015, along with the release of Rust 1.0 , a Mozilla-independent control was introduced. Since then, Rust has operated as a stand-alone organization, with Mozilla acting as a prominent and permanent financial and legal sponsor.

Mozilla has been and continues to admire the widespread use and support of the Rust language by many companies in the industry. Today, many companies, large and small, use Rust in more varied and significant ways, from Amazon's Firecracker to Fastly's Lucet , in the critical services that power Discord , Cloudflare , Figma , 1Password and many, many more.

On Tuesday, August 11, 2020, Mozilla announced a restructuring of the company and the layoff of approximately 250 employees, including active contributors to the Rust and Rust community. Understandably, these layoffs have created a lot of confusion and uncertainty about Rust. The purpose of this post is to address these issues. We also have an important announcement, which is discussed further!

Impact on the community

There is no denying the impact of past layoffs on all members of the Rust community, especially people who lost their jobs in the midst of a global pandemic. Sudden, unexpected layoffs can be difficult experiences, and they are just as difficult when the world seems to be watching them. For laid-off employees seeking help finding a job, you can find Mozilla's talent directory .

Despite its deep influence, the Rust project as a whole is very resilient to such events. We have leaders and members from all walks of life, employers, and this diversity is a critical asset. Moreover, it is a common misconception that all Mozilla employees who have participated in leading the development of Rust did so as part of their job. But in fact, many of the Mozilla employees in the Rust leadership contributed to Rust in their own time , not as part of their work.
