Just 5 minutes a day

YouTube Sports Blogger: "Do this exercise for only 5 minutes a day and you will have a steel press"

Your project manager: "It takes 2 minutes to complete this survey, is it really that hard?"

Online English school: "Regularity is the main thing in learning English!"

Time Management Training: "Just put everything on the to-do list and have weekly reviews."

Do you often hear this and sometimes say to others? Why no matter how many times we repeat such mantras, we so rarely go from words to deeds? How simple it is in the wording ... from this the feeling of guilt from the next trip to the refrigerator instead of a run is even stronger. Do you remember how well it all started? How smoothly did the new programming language go, with what enthusiasm we informed others about the beginning of a healthy lifestyle and morning jogging? Methodically, but not without effort, we will sort out this issue and form practical advice in a situation when we really want to start something new (our own project, habit, etc.), but we correspond to this desire and go astray. There will be many useful links, without studying which, the experience of reading the article will not be complete.

Interestingly, no one offers to take an intensive violin playing in 3 months, but they are happy to offer to do the same with programming, English, personal efficiency and some other well-selling skills. However, in reality, after completing such a course, reading an article, book or watching a video, we cannot immediately reproduce and apply something in practice with the same quality and accuracy as in the original. At the same time, we prefer to choose between different approaches, arguing why this or that book, article, foreign language course, study at a university did not help us. We actually shift responsibility for our results to the world around us, instead of starting to learn, adopt experience and apply in practice the knowledge of the author of the book, teacher, boss, parents.

Meanwhile, it is training that is a long and difficult, but the only way in comprehending a new skill, as well as in achieving your goals. Learning is known to be an iterative process of gaining experience, skill practice and feedback. It doesn't matter if we want to start running, learn a new language, complete a pet project or finish building our house - if you don't have enough experience, then you can't do without training. It is not only the theory of the subject area that is important here, but also the method we learn and apply in practice. In this regard, I have planned a series of articles on human meta-learning. This means that we will learn to learn effectively in the broadest sense of the word.

In the first article we will look at:

  • what are the approaches to training, motivation and personal effectiveness,
  • how willpower and consciousness influence the decision to "take the first step",
