The kid is sturdy. Snom D712 IP Phone Review

Good day, dear readers.

We are pleased to present you a new review, this time on the Snom D712 IP Phone.

Unpacking and packaging

The box with the telephone set has a laconic design and compact dimensions. Nevertheless, it contains:

  • Telephone set
  • Quick Start Guide
  • Stand
  • Category 5E Ethernet cable
  • A tube and a twisted cord to connect it

Design

The design of the device is classic for a modern IP-phone. The black plastic of the casing is slightly shaded by the light gray navigation key of the device, as in the older models, for example D725, which you can also familiarize yourself with .

The navigation key here is made in the form of an arrow indicator, on the sides of which there are separate keys for confirming the selection and canceling. The latter works quite interestingly, clicking on it while configuring the function will provide an exit from the setup menu as a whole. To undo only the last action, you should use the subscreen key.

All connectors on the phone are located on the back of the case. This model does not have a USB port, but it does have two 100Mbps Ethernet ports, an EHS microlift connector, as well as headset and handset ports and a power adapter connector. In addition to using this connector, you can power your phones from an Ethernet network if your switches support PoE 802.3af functionality. At the same time, the device's power consumption is very low, which is very pleasant, especially for offices with a large number of employees and call-centers. In addition to ports and connectors, the rear panel contains holes for wall mounting, which allows you to place the device in a vertical position without unnecessary accessories and adapters.

When using the IP-phone in the usual position, you can pay attention to the stand, made in the same style with the device. The stand is a monolithic part and, depending on the side of the mount, provides a tilt angle of the phone body of 28 or 46 degrees.

The screen of the device is 4-line graphic. It is quite enough for displaying operational information and IP phone settings using the OSD menu.

Snom D712 has 5 BLF keys with LED indication. Perhaps this amount will not be enough for a secretary or manager to use, but it will be quite enough for an ordinary employee who constantly communicates with several colleagues on work issues. BLF-keys are located on the right side of the case, next to the dialer, they are convenient to use. Key signatures are made "the old fashioned way", on a paper insert, which allows you to get rid of unnecessary fields when setting up the keys, minimizing the actions of the owner of the device in this case.

Software and customization

In the previous review, we considered registering an account and setting up BLF keys, the algorithm of actions for these settings is also relevant for the model from this review. Now let's say a few words about updating IP phone software.

You can always find the latest software on our technical site, to find it, visit the Snom Service Hub . The software is located in the "Firmware Update Center" section. Versions are listed in ascending order from bottom to top.

Select the version you need and go to its page. On the page, find the file link for your phone model and copy it.

In the web interface of the machine, go to the "Software update" section and paste the previously copied link in the "Software" field. After that, it remains to press the "Download" button and wait for the update and subsequent download of your device.

Functionality and operation

What separates a good device from a mediocre one?

Convenience of working with the device. All the phone keys from our review are large, with clear feedback, they do not fail anywhere and leave a pleasant sensation from pressing, whether it is dialing a number or turning on the speakerphone.

Clear indication. Indicators of this model do not fundamentally differ from other models of our product line. The indication is bright and noticeable, the indicators themselves are inscribed into the design of the case and keys very neatly, and do not attract too much attention in the off state, but they become very noticeable when the indication is active. This is true both for BLF and function keys, and for the MWI indicator located in the upper right corner of the phone case.

Convenience of customization. We have already touched on the topic of settings, our company is trying to reduce user actions when setting up devices, and we will continue to tell you about setting up the most frequently used functions in subsequent reviews and materials.

And, of course, the sound. Thanks to the acoustic laboratory, our company not only works directly with the capture and transmission of voice by devices, for the complete transmission of the necessary information between subscribers, but also strives to minimize noise and extraneous sounds that can interfere with the conversation of users.

The sound of the handset speaker is really clear, bright and pleasant. The microphone captures the sound of a conversation very well, while minimizing extraneous noise. Loudspeaker communication maintains the sound quality practically at the same level as when speaking through the handset of the device, adding quite a bit of deafness to the subscriber's sound. On the whole, the sound in our devices does not get worse when using younger models, we monitor its quality on all devices.

Summarize

Snom D712 is a device with not the greatest functionality, but it fulfills the functions assigned to it, providing good sounding and providing the user with a sufficient number of BLF and function keys. Due to its compact size and classic appearance, it will be appropriate both on the call center operator's desk and at the workplace of the head of a small department.
