How a computer linguist teaches Google Assistant to speak Russian

For the past four years, Tatiana Lando has been working as a computer linguist at Google in London. All this time she has been working on various projects in Google Assistant - a virtual assistant like Siri or Yandex Alice. In addition to her main work, Tanya conducts the AINL - Artificial Intelligence & Natural Language conference and in 2016 she became a co-author of the book of the first textbook in Russian "Applied and Computational Linguistics".

Her first big project was the launch of the Assistant in Russian - she and her team were responsible for understanding user requests and generating adequate responses in Russian. Due to the fact that the Assistant works in many languages at once, and the infrastructure was made based on English, the task turned out to be very nontrivial. For example, in Russian there is a complex morphology, but in English it is almost nonexistent. She has now moved on to another more research project. They study how communication between people works, so that they can use this knowledge in the development of the Assistant so that it can better understand and respond to users more naturally.

What Tanya will talk about on the air:

  • Who am I and what am I doing now
  • How I came to linguistics and how I ended up in Google
