How I corrected my vision

The attentive reader must have noticed that in the last article I noticed that "I watch serials with one eye." And I decided that it was a figure of speech.

No. I'm painfully precise about the little things.

I actually look at the computer with one eye - even now as I type this text. With my second eye, I look out the window, in which the views of Moscow flicker - I am going to work by train.

I switch between the eyes unconsciously - the picture of the world seen by me has no seams and glues. And it differs from the usual, average view from the eyes only in the crystal clarity of the picture - both near and far.

And I say this for a reason - just four years ago I looked at the world with two eyes at once, and not in turn. I received such an unusual vision consciously after the

correction operation .

Want to know more?

About five years ago, my friend and colleague Ivan decided to undergo vision correction surgery. The operation went well, without complications, reaching its goal. But Ivan did not like her - he hoped for more.

Before the operation, Ivan was short-sighted - he could see the picture well on the monitor screen, but he could hardly distinguish details in the distance. After the operation, he began to see well in the distance - but he had to wear glasses to work at the computer.

Miracles do not happen - a person's eyes eventually lose the ability to change the focal length. And the operation cannot return this ability - it can only readjust the range in which the eye sees well. I do not do vision correction - so I can tell you the truth: Classic vision correction surgery will not free you from glasses.

On the contrary, you are more likely to wear glasses - if you have not worn them before.

Like, for example, Ivan. He did not wear glasses in order to see details in the distance. It just wasn’t particularly important to him - he responded to my teasing, saying that “Unlike you, Alyoshenka, I’m not too lazy to come closer and consider everything in detail”. Now he is forced to wear glasses most of the day - like me, Ivan's main working tool is a laptop.

This news upset me - for the last few years my eyesight has deteriorated - myopia has progressed - I saw worse and worse in the distance.

The last straw that broke the back of a camel was the case when a topless girl sunbathing on the beach, on closer examination, turned out to be a plump boy. But I didn't want to correct my eyesight so that later I could work with glasses.

“As you wish,” I said, “but I do not agree. I don't want to have surgery to wear glasses. I want to see as well as before - both far and close! "

And then it dawned on me. If I do an operation on one eye, then I can see well and far and close. If, of course, I can get used to switching my eyes.

After reading the literature on this topic, I was convinced that I will be able to get used to it - a situation in which a person has different eyesight is quite common. I even had a difference before the operation - of course, not so significant. In addition, I risked nothing - in which case I could simply have an operation on the other eye, eliminating the imbalance.

And I started calling the clinics.

Looking ahead, I can say that I did not succeed in performing the operation in Moscow - the doctors insisted that they must operate on both eyes. Doctors like the operation on two eyes twice as much - because they receive twice as much money for it.

It should be noted, by the way, that the doctors, praising the operation, mentioned that the operation would not free from glasses - a quick indistinct patter. Their main task was to sell the service. And even with this they could not cope without lying - the price for the operation grew in the course of the conversation by leaps and bounds - they "remembered" more and more new conditions leading to an increase in cost.

After conducting several absurd dialogues - in which the representatives of the clinics assured me that they could not have surgery on one eye - even if the cost of the surgery "for one eye" was directly indicated on the clinic's website, I moved the search for the clinic to the province.

Where he quickly found what he was looking for - the Perm clinic was ready to carry out the operation cheaper than in Moscow without asking unnecessary questions - one eye is so one. Add mild hyperopia during surgery? - any whim for your money.

I will not describe the operation itself. Closing my eyes with a blindfold, after half an hour I was calmly driving home. In order to look at the reality around me with a different look in a few days.

My vision really became like that of an eagle - I saw (and see now) the smallest details - with extraordinary, frightening clarity. I have never seen so well - also because during the operation, I had a small congenital astigmatism removed.

I literally rediscovered the world - with the foliage of trees not smeared in a common heap, with architectural details, with previously unnoticed facial expressions ... and with many beautiful women.

With the other eye, I worked at the computer as usual. I learned to switch between the eyes for two weeks - during which, to be honest, I had a terrible headache. I do not presume to judge the truth - from getting used to switching - or from the increased detail of the world at times.

Four years have passed since the operation. I have not noticed any change in vision. Everything suits me. The operation did not affect the stereoscopic vision in any way - in the area where the stereo effect appears - I see quite clearly with both eyes.

Do I recommend the operation to other Habrovites? Naturally not - I'm not a doctor and I'm not ready to be responsible for someone else's health. It's one thing to poke around with a screwdriver in your own ear, another thing to recommend a similar operation to others. What I have done does not mean that you will succeed.

Shl. Without a gif with a cat, the article would be incomplete.

update: Masurao: There is such a type of presbyopia correction - monovision, it is widely used both in our country and in the West.

It turns out that I have invented a well-known method. Independently and a little earlier :)

The essence of the Monovision method is to separate the functional responsibilities of both eyes. One of them is "tuned" to near vision, the second - into the distance. As a rule, the dominant one is oriented towards viewing distant objects, and the other one - closely located.

Based on materials from the site www.ochkov.net/informaciya/stati/chto-takoe-monovidenie.htm

In the group on Reddit, among the positive reviews, cases are described when the method did not fit much:

Hi, I had monovision lasik done in April, I had good vision but was using readers for close up. I thought I had read enough to make a good decision on my doctor and the surgery, I was wrong. If I can tell you anything at all it would be to use contacts to simulate monovision for about a month and see if your brain can make the switch. I having been living in a blurred world since my surgery, no one ever offered me to trial monovision with contacts before my surgery I can no longer drive at night due to the extreme glare and my eyes are constantly strained and dry. Today I went to another eye doctor for a second opinion on wether to have another lasik surgery or not and she placed me in another contact which brought both my eyes back to distance only and it was like a gift from heaven, I cried, I haven 't seen anything in focus for 6 months!Anyway long story short, if your going to do it please please use contacts first to see if it's something you can tolerate. I believe the stats say 85% cannot.
