Kingston DataTraveler: the next generation of secure flash drives

Hello, Habr! We have great news for those who prefer to secure their data, which is stored not only on the internal drives of PCs and laptops, but also on removable media. The fact is that on July 20, our American colleagues from Kingston announced the release of three USB drives with support for the USB 3.0 standard, with a capacity of 128 GB and an encryption function. More specifically, we are talking about the Kingston DataTraveler Locker + G3 , Kingston DataTraveler Vault Privacy 3.0 and Kingston DataTraveler 4000 G2 . Further in the text, we will talk in detail about each of the drives and tell you what they can do, in addition to ensuring security.

Kingston DataTraveler Locker + G3: Unparalleled Protection

The Kingston DataTraveler Locker + G3 flash drive (available in capacities of 8, 16, 32, 64 and now 128 GB) protects personal data with hardware encryption and allows you to set a password to access information, which provides a double level of protection. The drive is made in a durable metal case and is equipped with a convenient lapel for attaching a USB flash drive to a bunch of keys (aka a keychain). Thus, the drive will always be with you (unless you are one of those who constantly lose the keys to your home and office, of course).

The Legacy DataTraveler Locker + G3 has established itself as one of the most reliable storage devices on the market. In addition, these drives do not require complex settings: one of the options allows you to set up backing up data from a flash drive to Google cloud storage, OneDrive, Amazon Cloud or Dropbox. And this is actually a triple defense.

When you connect Kingston DTLPG3 to your home PC and laptop, the drive will immediately prompt you to set an alphanumeric password, enter the necessary information for your own identification (which company do you work for, etc.), and then click OK. After saving the settings, the flash drive will automatically become encrypted. Everything is simple and is done in just a couple of mouse clicks, without requiring the installation of additional crypto-software.

And one more thing: if you left a USB flash drive at home, but you need instant access to the data stored on it, you can always access the backup copy on one of the cloud storages directly from your smartphone. Plus, this feature will help you quickly recover data from the cloud, even if you still manage to cause mechanical damage to the drive.

By the way, about the damage! Please note that the manufacturer gives a 5-year warranty for its drive, which indicates the high reliability of the component base, and also offers free technical support for the entire warranty period, which further increases the confidence in the device.

Losing a drive is no big deal either. The security system will not allow intruders or ordinary “mother's hackers” to crack your USB flash drive by guessing passwords. After 10 unsuccessful attempts to enter, DataTraveler Locker + G3 will automatically format and destroy all data (however, it will remain in the cloud storage).

Kingston DataTraveler Vault Privacy 3.0: For Business

The DataTraveler Vault Privacy 3.0 (DTVP 3.0) flash drive provides higher class protection and is aimed at the business segment: in particular, the drive supports hardware 256-bit AES-XTS encryption and is equipped with a durable aluminum casing that protects the flash drive from physical impact, and a sealed cap to prevent moisture and dust from entering the USB connector. An interesting feature is also the support of Linux OS, not just the common Windows and Mac systems.

As with the previous flash drive (Kingston DTLPG3), when using DataTraveler Vault Privacy 3.0, you just need to set a password and the drive will contain all the recorded data completely safe from intrusion. The function of protection against hacking is similar here: 10 attempts to enter a password, after which the information on the flash drive is destroyed. Attackers will not be able to hack a flash drive using the “brute-force” method from the word “completely”.

What else does a corporate flash drive offer us? First, it has a Drive Security utility on board that can be used to scan the internal capacity for security issues (such as malware or viruses). Secondly, read-only access is provided, which avoids the potential risk of infecting the PC (that is, if there is a virus on the USB flash drive, it will not be able to inject malicious scripts on other PCs to which the drive is connected).

Previously, DataTraveler Vault Privacy 3.0 drives were available in 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB and 64GB capacities, and a 128GB model has been added to the lineup. Well ... coupled with AES encryption, the Kingston DataTraveler Vault will allow you not to worry about possible leaks of valuable information, knowing that your data is protected by strong encryption

Kingston DataTraveler 4000 G2: Government Protection

The Kingston DataTraveler 4000 G2 also emphasizes data protection, but it goes even further than the Kingston DTVP 3.0. Together with the 128GB capacity, the end user gets multiple levels of advanced protection, so the offer is worthwhile. And if safety is a priority, it makes sense to consider DataTraveler 4000 G2 as a purchase. The device is made in a durable stainless steel case, has a sealed flap and, like the above products, offers 256-bit hardware AES-XTS encryption for reliable protection of information on flash memory.

In addition, the flash drive is FIPS 140-2 Level 3 Validation certified (a security standard for drives used by the US government). The drive also has protection against unauthorized access (if the password is entered incorrectly more than 10 times, the data is deleted), read-only access mode (to avoid infecting computers) and the ability to centrally manage the drive at the corporate level (remote password configuration and change of device policy and etc.). It should be noted that the utility for remote management and configuration of drives is not included in the software package and must be purchased separately. However, for any company these are quite acceptable costs.

Test results coming soon

And most importantly, new flash drives are already on their way to our specialists, who will conduct total testing of samples and will tell in more detail about what data transfer rates users can expect and how encryption algorithms are implemented. By this time, Kingston DataTraveler Locker + G3, Kingston DataTraveler Vault Privacy 3.0 and Kingston DataTraveler 4000 G2 will be available for sale worldwide.
