How to restore Sentry after a failed update

Hello. I want to talk about how the restoration of Sentry went after a failed update.

What is Sentry ?

It is an open source, complete bug tracking system that supports a wide range of server-side, browser, desktop and native mobile languages and environments, including PHP, Node. js, Python, Ruby, C #, Java, Go, React, Angular, Vue, JavaScript and more.

A little about how simple and unconstrained everything broke.

We lived on version 9.0.0 and it's time to update. Having felt the web interface 10.0.0, I decided to upgrade to it. This was the biggest mistake!

The update took place as usual. First, transition to 9.1.2, then to 10.0.0 (otherwise it is impossible). Then I found out that worker is not starting. The reason for this is the addition of new applications and dependencies.

Attempts to build apps and stuff them into k8s have been unsuccessful.

It was decided to roll back. But here I was disappointed. After migrating to version 10, some of the data is moved to clickhouse and removed from Postgres.

After 3 hours of work and the involvement of a DBA expert, the data was restored to working condition.

How?

We made a PG instance next to it, dropped the scheme from version 9.0.0 there and started a tabular recovery. Of course, there were some mistakes and a file.

The story doesn't end there. It's time to upgrade to version 9.1.2.

Collected the image, run:

sentry upgrade

and we see this wonderful message:

! I'm not trusting myself; either fix this yourself by fiddling
! with the south_migrationhistory table, or pass --delete-ghost-migrations
! to South to have it delete ALL of these records (this may not be good).
Exception in thread Thread-1 (most likely raised during interpreter shutdown)

After a long search, trial and error, a solution was found.

You need to restore the schema of the current version.

To do this, we clone the repository:

git clone https://github.com/getsentry/onpremise.git

Go to branch 9.1.2, since branch 9.0.0 is gone.

cd onpremise && git checkout tags/9.1.2

Next, we edit the image in the Dockerfile:

#cat Dockerfile
ARG SENTRY_IMAGE
FROM ${SENTRY_IMAGE:-sentry:9.0.0}-onbuild
Then edit the compose file

docker-compose.yml
# NOTE: This docker-compose.yml is meant to be just an example of how
# you could accomplish this on your own. It is not intended to work in
# all use-cases and must be adapted to fit your needs. This is merely
# a guideline.

# See docs.getsentry.com/on-premise/server/ for full
# instructions

    #sentry-postgres:
    # external: true

Few explanations. Since I have a separate database instance, I skip creation via compose, and volume sentry-postgres is also not needed.

After these manipulations, we start the assembly:

./install.sh

In the process, the error that I mentioned above may pop up. We do not pay attention and after the process is over, run the following command:

docker-compose run --rm web sentry django migrate --delete-ghost-migrations

So, the circuit is restored. You can upgrade to 9.1.2.

To do this, in the Dockerfile, change the version to 9.1.2:

ARG SENTRY_IMAGE
FROM ${SENTRY_IMAGE:-sentry:9.1.2}-onbuild
And run install.sh

./install.sh

If everything is done correctly, the process will complete without errors. The output should be something like this:

Stdout
# ./install.sh
