Intel RealSense Depth Camera D455 - the fourth in a series

Introducing the new Intel RealSense Camera - Depth Camera D455 . Unlike the new products of last year - the T265 tracking camera and the L515 lidar - the D455 is a classic depth camera, that is, a continuation of the line of devices that Intel has been developing for nearly a decade. This is the fourth model in the D400 family to be improved and revised.

In Intel's blog, we rarely talk about Intel RealSense technology now that we consider it necessary to make a short introduction each time before the announcement. 3D imaging technology has been developed at Intel since the early 2000s. The principle of operation of 3D cameras consists in the simultaneous formation of two types of images: a regular RGB frame and a depth map obtained using infrared emitters and sensors. The picture enriched with depth data can be used for computer vision and robotics, manipulations with depicted objects and their analysis, or as a natural human interface for controlling computer systems using facial expressions, hand and finger movements, and gestures.

was released to work with cameras(current version is 2.0). At one time, we actively published translations of articles on this topic in the blog , so it remains one of the few sources of information about RealSense in Russian.

Currently, among the classic depth cameras, the Intel RealSense D400 family is relevant, consisting of three models: D415, D435 and D435i. The D415 provides a clearer picture, but has a slower response and a more distant minimum distance. The D435 is more suited for AR / VR applications as its global shutter works better with fast moving subjects. The D435i features a built-in Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) that adds position and displacement data to the 3D picture that is important for mobile applications.

With the addition of new items, the overall picture looks like this.
