What education is required to build a career in a global IT company?

Statistics show that there is a sorely lack of qualified IT specialists around the world. According to the Korn Ferry Report , by 2030 the labor shortage will reach 85.2 million people worldwide. But we believe it's not just about technical literacy - it's about the fact that companies today need real IT leaders. About what, and where you can get practical knowledge, read under the cut, and at the end of the post - a link with registration for a webinar with graduates of the Schaffhausen Institute of Technology (SIT), who will talk about the features of the educational program of the new university.

For those who are interested in the issues of modern education at the intersection of IT and business, a webinar SIT Alumni Insights with the participation of alumni will take place on July 21 . The trained specialists will tell you personally why they chose SIT, and what is the difference between the educational program of the university for specialists seeking leadership positions in large companies.

“SIT provides unique learning opportunities in partnership with leading universities such as NUS and CMU. SIT programs truly sit at the intersection of science and industry. This is exactly what I needed after receiving my bachelor's degree in physics, ”says Daria Kublikova, an SIT student in Information Systems

«SIT , . , . , SIT — , , », — , SIT Information Systems.

“I chose SIT because I wanted to move to another rung of the career ladder - from a software engineer to a product development manager. Among the top technical MBA programs, I chose CMU MSPM, a unique collaboration between the School of Computer Science and the Tepper School of Business. SIT has a joint program with CMU that also provides financial support and guidance from industry experts. I believe this is an important foundation for my career in product management, ”said Arpita Ghosh, a SIT student in Product Management.

Graduates will share their plans for the future, as well as answer questions:

  • How to get a Master's degree in Switzerland? How much does it cost and how to win a study grant?
  • Why did they choose the Schaffhausen Institute of Technology (SIT)?
  • What scientific projects await students and under the guidance of which scientists will the training take place?
  • How to combine work in a global IT company with study and how will the university study program be structured?

At the end of the event, a Q&A session is scheduled, so you can ask the questions you are interested in on your own.

What kind of leaders are needed in IT?

By the way, at the end of June, the SIT webinar in Russian was already held with the participation of the Nobel Prize Laureate Konstantin Novoselov, as well as Doctor of Technical Sciences and SIT founder Sergei Belousov and co-founder of Acronis Stanislav Protasov. At this online event, representatives of the academic community and business identified exactly which competencies are lacking in IT staff at the global level, and also talked about the growing requirements for IT managers.

As Stanislav Protasov noted at the last online meeting, currently up to 15 different roles of IT leaders can be found. One way or another, they are present in every company, and the larger the organization, the less opportunities for employees to combine several roles at once. This is why every business owner dreams of finding talented and well-trained IT managers who can do their job better than themselves.

There are many examples of IT managers in the IT industry who have made a company successful with their jobs. For example, Ben Fati, who served as Chief Development Officer at Microsoft for many years, ensured the stability of the Windows Kernel. Mark Bregman has been one of the most successful Chief Technical Officers at Symantec, helping the company deliver truly cutting edge solutions. Peter Lee served as Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) at Microsoft, and in that position helped create many new ideas and concepts that we see in the company's products today.

Equally important are the roles of the CIO and CISO, which must ensure the uninterrupted operation of the infrastructure and, with minimal disruption to business processes, ensure maximum protection against threats. The role of the Chief Architect is to oversee the entire ecosystem of the company's products and their interoperability. For example, Bill Gates was the chief architect of Microsoft for quite a long time, and in the role of CA he did almost more for his corporation than in other roles, because a consistent system of technical solutions was built under the control of Gates.

Training of IT leaders at SIT

It was based on the needs of the business that the Master's program "Computer Science and Software Engineering Program" was created. It includes not only technical knowledge and skills, but also the ability to manage all aspects of technology development in a company. As part of the course, undergraduates work on real projects in large IT companies, and also communicate directly with mentors from among leading scientists in the field of information technology, advanced materials, quantum computing and cyber defense.

If you are wondering exactly how the educational process at SIT goes and what benefits students receive, you can find out first-hand at the SIT webinar on July 21, 2020.
