Quora allowed its employees to work remotely after the pandemic ends

Hello, Habr! I present to your attention the translation of the post "Remote First at Quora" by Adam D'Angelo, CEO of Quora, the developer of the knowledge sharing service of the same name. 06/25/2020.

We've been at home for three months now. It's a difficult experience, but it taught us a lot. Surprisingly, despite the fact that our company has grown as a company centralized in one place, despite years of investing in culture and processes based on this assumption, despite the fact that employees are stressed by what is happening in the world today despite the distractions associated with adapting to this situation, despite the difficulties employees with young children faced in not being able to send them to school or arrange for them to be looked after in any other way, we have been very productive all this time ... Many of us during this period were even more productive than before.

This raises an important question: What do we do when Covid-19 ends? Should we go back to how it was when most of the company was in the office? Or are we better off working remotely?

I always assumed that intellectual work would eventually become remote, but I believed that this would happen in the distant future, perhaps when virtual or augmented reality technologies became well developed. I believed that to create an Internet product, the entire company did not have to move to one region and squeeze into one physical office. But when I looked back at the world, it seemed to me that we were not ready for this yet. The vast majority of the best employees I know wanted to work in the office. Remote-only companies looked odd. Perhaps they created products that required less coordination, perhaps they succeeded despite the obstacles that teleworking posed on them, or perhaps they succeeded only because they were able to recruit those rare employees.who wanted and could work remotely.
