Hello, Habr! I recently finished watching Better Than People . I must say right away that I liked the series. It feels like a new type of Pepsi-Cola supplement was brought to Channel One and they created something really interesting.
Taking this opportunity, I would like to reflect a little on topics related to humanoid robots in our imperfect world.
Many films and TV series about the socialization of humanoid robots began to appear. At the level of personality, family, work and state. This has little to do with the increased capabilities of computer graphics. But most importantly, everyone became ready to perceive and discuss these topics at a new level.
First, I will try to express an opinion about modern cinema in a general sense, suddenly it will interest someone.
I want more normal human relationships
On average, there is some emotional degradation both at the level of plots and at the level of production. Lack of intelligible artistic idea, lack of humor and humanity is CONSCIOUSLY RETURNED with violence and cruelty. I do not mind murders and even massacres in the frame, if this is done to reveal an artistic idea. But if the whole idea is about murder and violence, then this is unacceptable to me.
I remembered one of the most bloodthirsty fighters with Schwarzenegger "Commandos". By today's standards, it is quite possible to put the qualification 8+. The kindest film for preschoolers. Remember how in one episode he holds the villain's leg over the abyss, eliciting information from him. What happened next is not tactfully shown, but in the next frame Schwarzenegger reports that he βlet goβ of the villain. Simple, witty and without unnecessary cruelty in the frame. By the way, excellent scripts were written for Schwarzenegger. Where did all these writers go? Joined the California Governor's Campaign?
Now, from violence in a general sense, I want to move on to violence against humanoid robots. When human-like androids began to appear in the frame, the "film brotherhood" immediately understood how it could be used. You can show unprecedented brutality in the frame, and at the same time leave the film as part of even a family viewing. Although, if what is being done in the frame with androids were done, for example, with dogs, then the film would be immediately banned for distribution in all civilized countries, including Somalia.
You will say that it's okay - these are pieces of iron. It's not that simple - these pieces of iron are very similar to people. If there are professional psychologists here, let them suggest the exact term - sublimation, broadcast, transfer, this is when you torture a doll, but imagine that you are torturing a person.
It's not all bad
But not everything is so bad, there are exceptions. I want to make a small selection of films. It does not claim to be complete and reflects my personal subjective view of the problem.
In these films, although there is cruelty towards androids, the main idea is that this should not be done.
All these films are also united by the slightly forgotten idea of ββselfless devotional service. Human society is becoming more and more selfish. For one person to do something for another - this is becoming less and less. Because of this, families collapse, children leave home, old people are left alone.
Androids in this regard are sympathetic, because they were originally created to serve and help. Is this why our children no longer like the company of their parents or peers, who constantly burden them with their problems? They prefer the company of a tablet or a smart speaker that fulfills all their desires without a word.
Bicentennial man

I want to start the selection with this particular film, as it sets the standard for attitudes towards robots. For a long time I did not know about the existence of this film. I watched it almost by accident on a small TV in some hotel. I was very surprised by the quality of the plot. Everything fell into place when I found out that the film was shot based on Asimov.
The main character of the film, I consider not the robot itself, but its owner. It is thanks to his impeccable moral guidelines, his intellect and personal qualities that everything that happened to this robot happened. The film is steeped in the American Dream and liberal values. Anyone who is close to all this will get great pleasure from the film.
I will tell you one incident in the spirit of this film. Once I was setting up Alice's smart speaker for an elderly man. So after each appeal to Alice, he thanked her for her help:
> Alice, what will the weather be like?
> It will rain tomorrow.
> Thank you Alice!
I wanted to tell him that it is not necessary to thank the column. But then I thought that this man might be right about something. After all, until the difficult problem of consciousness and subjective experience is resolved, we cannot unequivocally know whether an entity has feelings or not.
Robot and Frank
https://www.kinopoisk.ru/film/596232/
An excellent kind film with a lot of humor. Once a successful world-class professional rogue, Frank is now whiling away his days on a well-deserved retirement. A caring robot is assigned to help him. Suddenly, Frank learns that the robot is pretty loose about breaking the law and morality. And then it begins ...
What begins, I will not say. I would like to talk about the main axis of the film - whether a robot should comply with the law. The question is not as simple as it seems. Indeed, the three laws of robotics do not say anything about the implementation of civil norms.
Why did Azimov not take into account this important circumstance? It seems to me that he proceeded from considerations of logic, minimalism and beauty. And the mechanisms that regulate society cannot boast of either one or the other or the third :)
I think that when it comes down to it, another law of robotics will be introduced - zero in order of importance.
0. The robot must follow any orders of officials, and report all violations of the law by the owners and their non-payment of taxes at the following URL.
Accordingly, it is necessary to correct the first law following the logic.
1. A robot cannot, by its action or inaction, allow harm to be done to a person, if this does not contradict the zero law.
It is in this form that the laws of robotics will exist in practice, which will better meet the problems and demands of society.
Short circuit

I am writing about this film with excitement, because it may have influenced my choice of profession. I watched it in the cinema four times. And each time he followed with trepidation the adventures of a small, smart, kind robot.
He was made to kill. But despite the fact that he possessed the most powerful weapon, he almost never used it.
If in the previous film the axis passed between the robot and the law, then here the axis passes between the robot and the military. The film is permeated with pacifism and anti-militarism.
It

Although there are no humanoid robots in this film, in my opinion there is something more important in it. After all, appearance is often not the most important thing. Sometimes one voice is enough ...
The film raises the bar of artificial intelligence to an almost unattainable height, from which all modern efforts to create voice assistants seem to be a petty fuss in an empty box.
The film is built around an age-old problem, which has become especially acute in recent years - a modern man has practically nothing to talk about with the opposite sex. All the interlocutors around him, for whatever reason, do not pass the Turing test.
The film's summary can be summed up with the famous phrase from Prostokvashino: if I had such a cat, I would not have married at all.
People
https://www.kinopoisk.ru/series/855925/
The series, which, in my opinion, opened a new wave of works about humanoid robots. It's even difficult to say what is the novelty here. Probably, in the routine with which the coexistence of humans and robots is described. At the center of the series is human relationships and their deformation under the influence of more and more human-like creatures.
I would also like to note that in this series the issue of the "ominous valley" is fully explored . Various cases are shown very well: people; androids; people who pretend to be androids; androids who pretend to be human.
The only thing - closer to the third season, the series completely slipped into the metaphor of android migrants, and it became a little tiring. It may be interesting to watch about it in the European Union, but for me it is not a very important topic. Moreover, there is a series better than "People".
Better than people
https://www.kinopoisk.ru/series/996399/ We
got to the work that appears in the title of this article. Many complaints can be made about the series, ranging from a not very complex palette of emotions in the actors' play, a quick change in the moods and intentions of the characters for the sake of a not very logical plot, an open desire to please all age categories of viewers - from adolescents to the elderly.
But in general, I repeat, I liked the series and left a feeling of good, I would even say excellent work. The main advantages are very well thought-out ideas of using new technologies in everyday life and in the "national economy". In the frame constantly - robots of varying degrees of humanity, transparent phones and tablets, quadcopters, holograms and other attributes. After a while, you even stop noticing it and take it for granted, and this is very difficult to achieve. In general, the technical team responsible for special effects - five with three pluses. I also liked the blatant irony over Sberbank and over everything related to the Early Pension program.
In general, many thanks to Channel One.
Project Anna Nikolaevna

would like to complete this strange selection with another, in my opinion, interesting project. This time from the TNT channel. The series belongs to a lighter category, it has a lot of humor and more or less explicit scenes. Separately, it should be said about the excellent performance of Sergei Garmash, who can be said to have "pulled" the entire series.
Strength and control
Looking back at the list above, I would like to think again why all these films bribe me. What is the main character's secret? I would derive the following formula.
The main character is very powerful. So large that it can affect not only some local events, but also the course of history as a whole. But the trouble is - he is a little naive, at first he does not really understand life and trusts his abilities to not very good people. Moreover, most often he himself is unaware of his strength. But in the course of the development of the plot, the main character begins to better navigate in life. He begins to control his power, with the result that all the villains get what they deserve.
As one of the variations of this plot, you can recall the story that happened (or may not have happened) with Bruce Lee. As a child, he was ill and in order to get better he began to engage in health-improving gymnastics. The longer he practiced, the deeper he got into the logic of the exercises. Imagine his surprise when simple health-improving movements actually turned out to be a disguised deadly combat system.
And when I try to learn new features of JavaScript or Rust for purely recreational purposes, or do other mentally useful IT exercises, I have one strange thought. Maybe programmers are better than people too ...
