@Databases Meetup video: Percona, Postgres Pro, Tarantool and MCS

Hello! On June 25, the second @Databases series meetup was organized by Mail.ru Cloud Solutions in cooperation with Tarantool. The transition to online does not bypass anyone, but even at a remote location, we managed to bring together more than 400 participants to discuss the urgent problems of modern production databases.

Under the cut of video performances: Percona on how to build a hybrid cloud using K8s, which will replace DBaaS; PostgreSQL with two talks at once - told everything about JSON [b] in Postgres, and also shared strategic plans for database development; and Mail.ru Cloud Solutions - how S3 storage has evolved over its three years in production and the approach to Tarantool in its architecture has changed with it.

How to Build a Hybrid Cloud with Kubernetes, which can replace DBaaS. Petr Zaitsev, CEO of Percona

The DBaaS model for databases is preferred by many companies for its simplicity and convenience. Typically, DBaaS creates a vendor lock and leads to an increase in additional costs that exceed their own infrastructure costs. This is a significant disadvantage of this model.

Peter will show you how with Kubernetes you can build a hybrid cloud that replaces DBaaS. Kubernetes allows you to build a fully OpenSource DBaaS-like solution that can be deployed anywhere Kubernetes runs - in the public cloud and in your private data center - without being tied to a vendor.

S3 architecture: 3 years of evolution for Mail.ru Cloud Storage. Vladimir Perepelitsa, architect of the Mail.ru Cloud Solutions platform

Over the three years of its life, MCS S3 storage has grown to a cluster of tens of terabytes in RAM, where metadata about billions of user objects lies. The architecture of such a cloud database requires a non-trivial approach. For example, it is critical for her to be able to scale linearly.

Vladimir will tell you the history of the formation of the architecture of our solution, how sharding was implemented, how data migration was performed without downtime, and what an important role the use of the Tarantool database played in the development of S3.

JSON [b] in Postgres: It's Time for the Great Unification. Oleg Bartunov, CEO, co-founder of Postgres Professional

Postgres is the first significant relational database management system to provide support for semi-structured data such as Json. The CEO of Postgres Professional will talk about the history of Json, the specifics of its implementations, and plans for its development, including compliance with the SQL standard, improving functionality and performance.

Evolution of PostgreSQL over the years and strategic development plans. Ivan Panchenko, co-founder and deputy CEO of Postgres Professional

Postgres Pro is a commercial fork of Postgres from Postgres Professional. Forks, including commercial forks, are an important part of the global Postgres ecosystem, bringing cutting-edge developments to the "common pot". The co-founder of Postgres Professional will talk about why the company came to the need to release its own fork of Postgres, what are the main differences between Postgres Pro and PostgreSQL, and will share plans for product development.
